Invented by a California auto mechanic, the initial slot machines had 3 spinning reels with diamonds, hearts, spades and a cracked Liberty Bell on each. Prior to this invention, the name "slot machines" was used to characterize various kinds of vending machines.

The initial across the board use of slot machine games in US brick and mortar casinos is attributed to the Flamingo Hotel, Las Vegas somewhere around 1940. The head of the casino had originally thought the machines would be perfect to intrigue tired wives of a few of the biggest whales of the betting house. He didn’t know that the slots would be a fun activity for almost everyone and that the appeal would extend further than the apathetic wives. Now, it is said, slot machine games comprise over 2/3rds of all money generated by American brick and mortar casinos.

Slot machines absolutely have a rich history. From the petite invention of the late-19th century to the billion dollar business of today, slots will continue to expand in universal appeal.
